Life Behind the Screens: JP Cherry, EAM Consultant

From rugby league to enterprise systems, JP Cherry on problem-solving, teamwork, and finding balance in consulting.

At Lánluas, our people bring diverse experiences that shape how we work with clients. For JP Cherry, that journey began in a very different arena, on the rugby league field.

Before moving into the world of technology and SaaS, JP pursued a career in professional rugby league, playing in Brisbane alongside names like Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk, and later playing for the Manly Sea Eagles, in Sydney. When that chapter came to an end, he returned to the Gold Coast and made the decision to study IT, a move that would define the next stage of his career.

He joined TechnologyOne straight out of university, where he spent a decade building deep expertise in enterprise systems. In 2023, he made the move to Lánluas, bringing that experience into a consulting environment.

Today, JP works as an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) Consultant, helping organisations manage everything from operational work orders to financial asset tracking. His work spans a wide range of industries, but at its core, it’s about helping clients bring structure to complex systems and processes.

Businesses need to understand and organise their assets properly. Once that foundation is right, everything else flows from there.

A typical day for JP involves working across both operational and financial aspects of asset management. That might include supporting work orders for inspections or maintenance, or helping clients manage asset lifecycles through depreciation and revaluation processes.

While the systems themselves are powerful and flexible, JP says one of the biggest challenges clients face is getting their internal processes and data aligned.

TechnologyOne is flexible, but there are a lot of internal steps and approvals on the client side. Getting the data and processes right upfront makes all the difference.

What stands out most to JP about working at Lánluas is the team culture, even in a remote-first environment.

You might know your area well, but no one knows everything. Everyone is willing to help each other out, and we’re all working towards the same goals.

That collaborative mindset also underpins how he approaches problem-solving, something that continues to motivate him day-to-day.

I enjoy finding solutions. If you can solve a problem, it’s a great feeling. If you can’t, you work with others until you get there.

Moving to a fully remote role has also been a defining shift. After years of commuting daily to Brisbane, JP now has back hours in his day and time he can reinvest into both work and life outside it.

Outside of consulting, JP is a keen golfer and values time spent with his family. He’s also proud to have been the first in his immediate family to attend university, with both of his children now following their own paths through higher education.

When asked what advice he would give to someone starting out in consulting, his answer is simple:

Keep building your knowledge. Clients want someone who understands both the system and the process, that’s where you add real value.
